📘 Fiske Word Power – Chapter 1: Short Words

1. gad → ول‌گشتن، بی‌هدف گشتن
   She spent the afternoon gadding about the city instead of working.

2. fop → مرد خودنما و شیفته‌ی لباس و ظاهر
   The fop checked his reflection in every shop window as he walked.

3. dun → رنگ قهوه‌ای متمایل به خاکستری / طلبکار شدن
   The horse had a dun coat.
   The landlord kept dunning the tenant for unpaid rent.

4. ape → تقلید کردن (معمولاً احمقانه)
   He aped his teacher’s accent to make the class laugh.

5. hex → نفرین، جادو کردن
   The villagers believed the old woman had put a hex on their crops.

6. ken → حوزه‌ی دانایی و درک
   That theory is beyond my ken.

7. pox → آبله / نفرین قدیمی (لعنت)
   In the 18th century, smallpox killed millions.
   “A pox on you!” he shouted angrily.

8. sow → بذر پاشیدن / کاشتن
   Farmers sow seeds in the spring.

9. vex → آزار دادن، رنجاندن، کلافه کردن
   The noise outside the window vexed her while she was studying.

10. vie → رقابت کردن
    Several teams are vying for the championship title.
