ساختار تضادی: برای بیان تضاد بین دو مورد، while/whereas/where همراه با کاما به کار می‌روند.

برای استفاده از سه کلمه‌ی ذکر شده دو روش وجود دارد:

Independent Clause, while/where/whereas + clause

While/Where/Whereas + clause, Independent Clause

معنی: درحالی‌که (به معنی تضاد با مورد قبلی یا بعدی است)

While Tom's very good at science, his brother is absolutely hopeless

درحالیکه تام در علوم بسیار خوب است، برادرش کاملاً افتضاح است.

Walnut is a hard wood, while pine is soft

گردو یک چوب سخت است، درحالی‌که [چوب] کاج نرم است.

​​​​ The old system was fairly complicated, whereas the new system is really simple

سیستم قدیمی نسبتاً پیچیده بود، درحالی‌که سیستم جدید واقعاً ساده است.

Whereas the population of working age increased by 1 million between 1981 and 1986, today it is barely growing

Sometimes a teacher will be listened to, where a parent might not

گاهی اوقات به معلم گوش داده می‌شود، درحالی‌که به والدین نه.

Where some people learned to play the accordion for dances in their community, others took music lessons
